Basic Problem Solving

Perfectly situated plastic platform for writing down furniture codes while shopping in IKEA.

Creating a great service, an appreciated experience, is simply about solving problems that exist currently or that businesses inflict on their customers. Also, simple solutions don’t always need to be based on months of in-depth research.

Many, many times it’s just about meeting a basic, and obvious need.

For example, the small writing platform on the IKEA shopping cart handle. It’s there to assist with writing your furniture codes down as you shop. It’s good for customers, it’s good for the store; especially as users potentially struggle with the system of recalling codes for later item finding.

I recall some years back, before this piece of plastic was placed on the cart handle, people would be writing the codes down on their spouses’ backs, their wallets or any other flat surface. It was a mess.

I definitely recall being frustrated at that experience. But IKEA solved the frustration by putting that plastic platform exactly where hands need them to be.

Basic. Simple.
